ABOUT PROJECT

Mariupol, located in Eastern Ukraine within the Donetsk region, has been heavily impacted by the ongoing conflict. As a result, the city has sustained significant damage across all spheres of urban life. In response, the city government in exile has decided to create an urban vision to inspire the rebuilding and revitalization of Mariupol following its de-occupation.

The Challenge

What could be the urban vision for the currently occupied city of Mariupol?

The Context of the Challenge

This project was initiated as part of “ReBorn Mariupol” driven by the urgency to prepare for the eventual de-occupation of Mariupol. It aims to facilitate quick and effective actions to rebuild the community, culture, environment, and economy of the city.

The Approach

01
Context ANALYSIS

We analyzed the social, economic, cultural, and environmental context of Mariupol city, both before the war and in its current situation.

02
CITIZEN SURVEY

We conducted an online survey that engaged 2000 Mariupol residents.

03
CO-DESIGN WORKSHOPS

In collaboration with PUPA, we led a two-day workshop that included local experts, Mariupol citizens currently residing in Lithuania, and a delegation from Ukraine.

04
CREATION OF THE NARRATIVE

We co-created a narrative for Mariupol city, capturing its shifting identity and future ambitions.

05
Identification of Citizen Needs and Expectations

We helped to identify and categorize citizen needs and expectations for the city post-deoccupation.

05
Creation of the Concept of Urban Development

Based on the narrative and identified needs, guidelines for urban solutions were created.

The Insight

Mariupol is not just a physical space but a phenomenon embedded in the collective consciousness. It represents an imaginary future that inspires residents to return with pride, create with care, and lead by inspiration.

The Change To The Context

01

Fostered the
Dream

The engagement process fostered a dialogue with direct stakeholders, affirming their desire to have a place worth returning to.

02

Framed the Narrative

We structured a story that connects and sets goals for the better, enabling urban and other infrastructural solutions to be implemented integrally and cohesively.

03

Enabled Further Actions

The urban vision for Mariupol, along with four other visions developed by different teams, has been processed by the municipality of Mariupol with hopes that the city will soon be de-occupied.
