ABOUT PROJECT

A few centuries ago, the Sapieha Palace bustled with the aristocracy of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, where art was an integral part of daily life, reflecting the wealth and taste of its owners and their guests. Restored and reopened in spring 2024, the palace now aims to enrich the public through its cultural offerings.

The Challenge

How can a restored heritage site be transformed into a cultural institution that respects and dialogues with the historical legacy of the Sapieha Palace while addressing the needs of contemporary society?

The Context of the Challenge

Sapieha Palace is an architectural, artistic, and historical monument of national importance, once a vibrant center of noble life in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. After years of abandonment, the palace is now undergoing a renaissance. The Contemporary Art Centre is tasked with creating an inclusive cultural institution that both respects the heritage of the site and addresses modern societal needs. This initiative seeks to enrich Lithuania’s cultural landscape while tackling challenges in Lithuanian culture and education.

The Approach

01
Context Study

An in-depth analysis explored the social, cultural, environmental, and economic aspects of Sapieha Palace, along with its competitive and collaborative potential.

02
Public Online Survey

A survey was conducted to gather insights on public expectations and needs for the cultural institution within Sapieha Palace.

03
Stakeholder Involvement

We engaged potential partners, cultural and educational experts, as well as local organizations and communities, to co-develop the institution’s vision.

04
Developing Guidelines for the Concept

Using the gathered data, we created comprehensive guidelines to shape the conceptualization and actualization of the cultural institution at Sapieha Palace.

The Insight

01
Heritage & Contemporary Culture

The institution fosters dialogue between historical heritage and contemporary culture.

02
Inclusivity & Growth

The institution embraces diversity, offering opportunities for personal and professional growth, particularly through cultural education activities.

03
Cross-Sectoral Collaboration

It promotes dialogue across various cultural sectors, blending knowledge and works from different areas.

The Impact

In 2024, the reopening of Sapieha Palace marked a new chapter. Our contribution helped shape the institution’s strategy and public image, establishing it as a prominent cultural hub in the Vilnius cultural scene.
